Price we pay
for the ill-conceived convenience and our lack of knowledge
Our strive for convenience, combined with the catchy slogans of cat-food manufacturers resulted in that few people know (beside quoting the brand name) how to properly feed the cat. Unfortunately, also too few breeders and veterinarians can give a comprehensive advice in that respect, going beyond recommending a particular pet-food brand.
In the today's world, ruled by processed and fast food, this strive for convenience would not be too surprising, if not the fact that it is so detrimental to the health of our pets. Fully contrary to what the pet-food industry promises.
For the sake of simplicity, the issue of the quality of pet-food ingredients will not be discussed here. Let’s focus exclusively on the knowledge on how the cat's organism functions.
This knowledge will take us to face the facts so eagerly overlooked by the fans of convenient can-food or dry food for cats. The fact, that this benefit of our “civilisation” has led to its other manifestations: diseases known so far only to the modern human’ world – diabetes, cancer, obesity, hypertension ... With this in mind, it is hardly surprising that precious wild cats in a zoo do not get a "practical dry food recommended by a veterinarian," but - as in nature - fresh meat and even live rodents.
How would the Nature want it?
Let's look at the most important facts:
Cat is a 100% carnivore. She cannot, as a human or even to a certain extent a dog, assimilate protein and key aminoacids from vegetable sources and her body can only hardly process and dispose of carbohydrates. Accordingly, grain ingredients (corn, wheat, soy, all kinds of flour/meal), contained in conventional cat-food for technological reasons and for lower production costs, are not only useless but extremely harmful. It is not only preservatives and low quality of meat contained in pet-food that is responsible for increasing kidney problems, obesity and premature aging and death in pets. It is also, or even the most and foremost, the high sources of carbohydrates.
It is one of the mythos that commercial pet-food is perfectly balanced for the cat's body and “scientifically proven”. If so, there would not be such large differences in the hundreds and thousands of types of pet-food on the market. At the same time, in the Nature there is no other mouse for kittens and the other for middle-aged males. There are no “anti-hairball” sparrows, sparrows light, preys for long-haired cats, small cats, or for older cats.
It is our "scientific" feeding that resulted in the need to produce food for its own side-effect: there is pet-food to lose weight, against allergies, against the hypersensitive digestive system, kidney disease, diabetes, teeth problems .. And a closer look at its ingredients shows that it very little differs from the one that caused these problems.
Even the pet-food with the best ingredients must undergo processing, high thermal treatment, preservation and is then stored for many months. Most of the enzymes and vitamins are irretrievably lost in this process and cannot be equally valuably supplemented by artificial supplements.
The cat is naturally best suited to digest raw meat and it takes from it all enzymes, amino acids, proteins and minerals necessary for her health. Raw meat is the most absorbable for the cat’s body. Better than the cooked.
The natural diet free from carbohydrates provides the proper body-Ph and good bacterial flora, guaranteeing a high resistance to disease and the best protection against parasites, viruses and fungi.
It is not true that the cat's digestive system has changed in the evolution through the last dozen years of feeding it dry- or can-food. No evolutionary changes in the cat’s body could ever be established in that respect. The truth may be only that a cat, having been subjected to such feeding for a long time (with flavour and taste enhancers) cannot really smell and taste the fresh, raw meat and turns back to her favorite can-food.
Your cat would buy mice
Although it requires some effort, preparation of wholesome, fresh food for your cat is not difficult. The person adopting a kitten from our cattery gets from us all the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge in that respect. We developed relevant rules and guidelines and any cat owner can always count on our support and advice.
In general, we can briefly say that the ideal model of a balanced diet for a cat is what she would eat in the wild - small rodents and birds. If we put them apart into single components, we can say that they consist of bones, muscle meat, heart, liver, stomach content (plants), blood. If then we compare it with veterinary tables, we can see that precisely in these "ingredients" all the key vitamins, minerals, enzymes, elements, proteins and amino acids are contained in the ideal proportions for a cat. Our aim therefore is to copy the cat’s "prey" and to get a mixture as close to the chemical analysis of a small rodent as possible. Such feeding system is called the B.A.R.F. (Biologically Adequate Raw Feeding). At the market there are also many supplements that help to complement and balance the meal and save you time with, i.a. grinding bones (chicken wings or chicken backs).
In our cattery we have also developed our own blend of natural ingredients which are added to meat to make a 100% complete food, fulfilling all daily requirements for vitamins and minerals. The formula contains also natural substances that prevent parasites. Each our kitten leaves our cattery equipped with the Formula and natural oil for an easy BARF – food preparation.
For those who decide to buy ready-made food for cats or would like to save that option when, for example, traveling with a cat, we have prepared a list of pet-food sorts that contain 100% high quality meat (ie not "ingredients of animal origin" or "meat by-products "which are nothing but an attempt by the food industry to utilise the waste). We recommend only wet food, which, even in its shortcomings, is the most similar to natural cat food and can ensure the best water-balance for the cat’s body. It is, namely, not true that the cat is able to supplement dry food with a sufficient amount of fresh water. By drinking water it can never reach the level of hydration equal to that when eating foods naturally high in moisture (as a mouse). Unfortunately, years ago, before we have gained this knowledge, our 8-year-old male cat died of kidney failure, "despite" feeding him only an expensive, recommended by a veterinarian, dry-food for "castrated males with renal problems "....
Our advise for all cat owners is - read labels very carefully! The formal ingredients of pet-food, not the description made by the manufacturer.
And be proud for feeding your cat with your own, well-prepared cat-food. Cats eat it with such an enthusiasms that everyone feels like the master-cook of the family!
